Best Practices Stream

  • The Importance of Play
    • It is difficult to learn to foster early skills in childhood and carry them through the hardships of growing up in a society that does not always accept play as the conduit for children to learn. Learn how important it is for older children to continue to foster their imagination and creativity through play! UN Convention of the Rights of the Child; Article 31 (Leisure, play and culture): Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities.
  • Get Outside and Play
    • “Play is the work of the child”, and one of our key roles as educators is to create spaces that allow unstructured play that stimulates and engages children, allowing them to directly experience the natural world as they follow ants and smell the flowers. Research shows that children who play outside in nature in the company of a caring adult YOU! are more likely to practice responsible environmental behaviour when they grow up. In this interactive session, you will learn about the research and benefits of active outdoor nature play, consider how to weave this in your teaching/parenting and come away with practical ideas to incorporate into your practice. Come prepared to go outside! Participants will be able to share the benefits of outdoor play with their colleagues, parents and children, come away with at least one new activity to implement in their work, be inspired to explore new ways to engage children outdoors, and learn resources and ideas for doing more and taking this work further.

Prolonged exposure to traumatic events, such as abuse or neglect, can negatively impact the developing brain. Although it may be uncomfortable to talk about, adults who care for children must be prepared to respond when a child or youth reach out for help as this is the first step on their journey to safety and well-being. • Deconstructing Gender Identity
    • Is it a pink glitter princess explosion extravaganza? Or a blue rocket strapped to a rather confused looking dinosaur? The truth beneath all of people’s inner complexities and societal expectations is that we all itch with the necessity to know: is it a boy or a girl? Does gender matter? Yes, gender matters. The truth is, gender is a permeable essence that matters even more in the gender identification of child development. Stereotypes prevail in the world of toys and children’s learning spaces. This inevitably influences children’s behaviour, self-concept/self-identity and body image.
