Hello families!

My name is Maggie! I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Child Studies program, majoring in early childhood education at Mount Royal University. I have my level 2 childcare certification, and I am working towards my level 3. I have been working as an early childhood educator for 3 years, with children ranging in age from 10 months-12 years. I completed my practicum at TOPP KIDS Out of School Clubs, and I am now joining the team as an Active Play Coordinator. I am thrilled to continue growing with the TOPP KIDS community. I cannot wait to share my passion for learning and children with everyone here. Apart from work, I also love to hike with my dogs, go to the gym and play board games. I would like to take the chance to thank everyone for this opportunity, and I look forward to my time here!

"Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul."

Shannon has always been surrounded with children. Whether it was her five biological children or the neighbourhood children, she is most comfortable in the swarm of children. She loves all ages and stages of development. With her level one, she has worked at the local preschool for the last 10 years. During the COVID 19 lock down, Shannon trained to be a postpartum doula. She is excited to try her hand at the school age care. She loves to be goofy and carefree and is excited to be "one of the kids". She loves the "light-bulb" moments children have when something clicks in their brains and they understand what you are trying to teach them. In her spare time, Shannon collects hobbies. She has done everything from all types of painting, to all types of needlework and all the way to some woodworking and gardening. There isn't anything she isn't willing to try at least once.

Marie (she/her)

Active Play Coordinator

Marie moved to Calgary 5 years ago from Quebec and recently graduated from Mount Royal University with a Bachelor's Degree in Childs Studies with a Major in Early Learning and Child Care and a Minor in Business. She started working with children as a babysitter at 12 years old and continued throughout her life as an extra-curricular animator at elementary schools leading activities, Summer Camps, Early Childhood Settings, before and after school programs, and curriculum programming. She loves to explore new art forms, different physical activities, and new experiences. Anything that pushes her to think creatively and outside of her comfort zone makes her happy. For her, the best part of working with children is seeing the "ah-ha" moment in their faces when they understand something new or figure out a solution to a problem. Supporting them through their thinking process and working on their strengths and interests is what made her pursue a career in child care.

Program Coordinator

Hi there! I have been in the Early Childhood Industry for about four years and I love to see children grow! I have worked with all different ages from as young as 19 months to school aged children. I am currently enrolled to complete my level 3 in Early Childhood Education!

I am returning to TOPP KIDS after a hiatus and am SO happy to be coming home! I have worked with families, children, and youth for my entire working life since I was 16. I adore watching children learn on their own terms and absolutely love it when you can see something click in their brains. The infinite potential and capacity in children are what draws me to them again and again.

Active Play Coordinator

Hello, my name is Sarah and I recently moved back home to Calgary after spending seven years in Toronto, ON. I attended York University in Toronto and obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and hope to return back one day to school to either obtain my teaching degree or to become a speech therapist... I am a very indecisive person, and it might take a few years to figure this out! In my free time, you can catch me at the gym lifting some weights or hiking a mountain with a group of friends! My biggest goal for the year is to hopefully be a new mom to a golden retriever puppy!

Active Play Coordinator

Keandra Smith is so excited to be joining the TOPP KIDS Family as an Active Play Coordinator. Keandra started her journey with TK in 2013, as a child attending the summer camp program. She then became a Mentor, Junior-Leader, and has volunteered for the past four years. Keandra has continued to come back every year to have fun, make some great memories, spend time with friends and be part of the Topp Kids Family.

Keandra recently graduated from Crescent Height High School (CHHS - class of 2021-2022). She was enrolled in the Leadership Program at CHHS where they would create and organize events for the entire school to participate. Keandra was also enrolled in the Sports Medicine Program (where they would learn about how to treat/help athletes that where injured) and she was the Senior Girls Volleyball Trainer at Crescent. This year Keandra won the Grade 12 Athletics Sports Medicine Trainer of the Year (2021-2022) Award and the Sheila Iversen Athletic Training Award.

One of Keandra’s best memories about TOPP KIDS was being a Junior-Leader and going on the Leadership Camp. Keandra said she learned how to step outside her comfort zone and how to be a supportive role model for everyone/be part of the team. People find that Keandra is the type of person who is always wanting to have a fun day where everyone leaves with a smile on their face and incredible memories to share with others. Keandra loves taking kids to the park to play new games and making friendship bracelets.

Keandra is now excited to start a new chapter here at TOPP KIDS. “I always looked up to the leaders growing up and now I get to be one. It’s a dream come true!” Keandra’s #1 goal is to have a lot of laughter everyday and to help children step out of their comfort zones and try something new in a safe and creative environment.

I grew up in a small town in Saskatchewan. I spent most of my days playing sports and going on road trips. After graduating from Outlook High School I went to Lakeland College in Vermilion and graduated with my Level 3 in Early Childhood Education. I moved to Elk Point and became a pedagogical leader where I got to help the staff build the best space for those kids. I moved to Saskatoon and took on a B&A program of 30 children. That quickly grew into 110 children. In my spare time, I like to go on road trips, play sports, or paint. I love working with kids for many reasons but my favorite one would be how they remind me that I need to slow down and enjoy the little things.

Joon Young

Active Play Coordinator

I was born in  South Korea and in my family, we had three boys and we always played outside together. That is why I became very active, energetic, and athletic. Not having had digital gadgets at that time, I had a lot of time to play with peers outdoors and on the playground. This provided me with the opportunity to develop social skills.

Following in my father's footsteps, I studied civil engineering. After graduation, I came to Canada to improve my English and it did not take much time to fall in love with Canada because of its cultural diversity. It was a great benefit for me to experience various cultures in one country. Although I majored in engineering, I was always interested in early childhood education. That is because I wanted to make a contribution to our society by helping children become responsible adults. So I studied Early Child Education in Toronto and completed the course in 2016. My goal is to introduce various cultures to children, support their development, and positively guide their behaviors. In addition, maintaining a safe and healthy environment will be my top priority. Finally, every child has different needs and it will be my responsibility to meet their needs.

Hi, I am Simar, a delightful blend of Indian spices and Canadian snowflakes, with a pinch of quirkiness for good measure. Born and raised in vibrant tapestry of India. I decided to swap samosas for poutine and chai for maple syrup. Yes, I embarked on an adventure across oceans to the land of polite apologies and breathtaking landscapes – Canada!

Having hopped from Lethbridge to Calgary after my graduation from Child and Youth Care program recently, I'm still trying to find my way around this bustling city. If you spot a slightly lost soul staring at a map, that's probably me – but fear not, I'm as approachable as a warm cup of cocoa on a frosty day!

I would describe myself as an artsy person. I've transformed blank canvases into masterpieces, or at least that's what I like to tell myself. Another unique speciality of mine is that my henna skills are truly exceptional.

For me, my kindness is my compass and sweetness my signature scent. Building rapport is my jam; you could say I've got the Midas touch when it comes to making friends.

I possess boundless energy and a deep enthusiasm for engaging in diverse physical pursuits. My true passion, however, lies in working with children, where I can create impactful and positive transformations in their lives.

As I move forward, I am excited to see how my journey unfolds, and I am committed to making a meaningful impact every step of the way.

She now is perusing her dream of furthering her ECE education and one day would love to teach kindergarten and explore becoming a speech pathologist.

Active Play Coordinator

Hello families! My name is Rena and I am from Italy.

I completed my first degree in Midwifery (2012) where I learned the art of bringing forth new souls into the embrace of humanity. Then I joined the International Association Of Infant Massage (IAIM) and worked with parents and toddlers to promote the development of cognitive, emotional, and .motor skills in kids and teach the importance of active listening and non-verbal communication.

In 2019 I graduated in Pharmacy and got the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with school students through Health & Prevention programs and group counseling. The children were encouraged to share fearlessly their problems, assume responsibility for their actions, and were persistently praised for each goal they achieved. Being outdoorsy, I have always aimed to enrich little ones' exploration skills and nurture their social interactions by utilizing the outdoor environment as a year-round classroom and I firmly believe that by fostering the above-mentioned qualities, I can help every child to become, one day, a confident, compassionate, and responsible leader!

Hello everyone!

My name is Paige, born and raised in Calgary, I am excited to return to my home city now that I am a graduate of MacEwan University with my Bachelors of Child and Youth Care.

During my studies, I have worked with children, youth, and families, with a focus on mental health, developing community connections, and using creative arts as a therapeutic medium. I see myself as a life-long learner who loves to explore and grow, this is precisely the reason I love working with children and youth: I get to experience the same joy of learning as I support them in learning and growing and I learn just as much from them too!

Curious and adventurous, I love being hands-on with my work, especially when it comes to using arts and creativity; an artist and a musician, I spend most of my free time painting, sewing, practicing songs on my accordion, or playing the occasional video game.

I hope that with my creative nature, I will be able to develop strong connections and foster fun, memorable experiences with everyone at TOPP KIDS!

Founder of TOPP KIDS.

Having worked in Early Learning & Childcare for over 25 years, Leslie experienced firsthand the incredible effect of early academic exposure and the power of play, imagination, and natural exploration in young children.

In the years that followed, she worked to modify her own child developmental approach, one that would not impose on the child’s natural desire to explore, play, and learn by experimenting with the environment. She then came up with her Play, Grow, Laugh & Learn model.

In 2012, Leslie had unfortunately been diagnosed with Lupus and her son Cody stepped in to continue building on her dream.
